Sight Words

Sight words, popcorn words or high frequency words:

are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode.

Froggy!

Put your sight word cards into different baskets. Use a soft stuffed animal or ball to toss into the basket. Choose a card from the basket where your toy landed and read it aloud. If you read it correctly, you keep the card. Put it back if you need more practice.

Keep playing on your own, with a partner or in a group until all cards are gone.

Batman!

We LOVE this game!

Instructions: Put all sight word cards, as well as some "Joker Cards" (a card with the word "Joker" on it) in a container.

To Play: 1-Draw a card
2-Read the word
3-Pass

*If you draw a "Joker" put all cards collected back into container.
*If you do not know the card, place it back into container.

BAM!

Instructions: Put all sight words in a stack as well as a "BAM" card (a card with the word "BAM" on it) mixed in.

If you choose a "dealer," they will hold up the cards and each player will have a chance to read the word.
You may also decide not to have a "dealer." In that case, place the cards face down on the center of the table. Each player will draw a card to read it.

If they can read the word, they keep the card. If they do not, the player next to them has a chance to attempt to read and keep the card. If they reach a "BAM" card, they must return all the cards to the stack.

My class LOVES this game. You can play at home, although the more people, the easier the game. You MUST distribute all cards, so if you play with your family, each member could hold up to 5 or 6 cards!

I know my kids love Angry Birds. Here's another game like BAM and POW!
